Flashback to 2020.
Let’s go on a trip down memory lane, back to the beginning of 2020.
New Year strikes, fireworks go off - and I’m at home playing video games.
Of course we took a break to count down, crack open a bottle of sparkles and toast - but other than that, I was working on something more important: the 2020 backlog challenge.
It wasn’t intended as such. Animal Crossing New Horizons was coming out in March, and I was so excited for that, I couldn’t get really fixated on another game in the meantime. it started out as me playing a few random games to see if I could find something I liked, but it quickly turned into playing a new game each day, spending about 30 minutes on it and then writing a quick “first impressions” review on it. It was incredibly stimulating and I did find a few amazing games I otherwise would never have played.
The backlog situation today.
Fast-forward to… now. I have a lot of games on Steam. A LOT. I subscribe to Humble Choice and get about a dozen games added to my account and thus my backlog on a monthly basis. To give you an idea, here’s a screenshot from Steam Calculator:
Because it was so much fun trying out a new game every day and sharing my thoughts about it with others, and my backlog is closing in on 1000 unplayed games, I decided to give it another try in 2025, because why not?
The 2025 backlog challenge.
Starting January 1st, I will play a new* game every day.
When I say *new, I mean new to me, of course. Not limited to new releases, just games I haven’t previously played, that are already in my library or end up there from upcoming Humble Bundles. Or that I impulsively buy.
I will write down my first impressions and:
post a short Steam Review;
if the game fits the criteria, post a short review to my Curator page;
bundle the past week’s reviews in one blog post on Rambling Reviews;
and, most importantly:
share it in my newly created 2025 Backlog Challenge group on Steam!
And that’s where you come in.
I would like to make this a group effort - yes, I know you can’t make my backlog disappear, obviously, but you can work on your own! We can do it together! We can chat about it and encourage each other to actually keep doing it - it’ll be fun!
The idea is to add a Discussion to the group forum every day, detailing which game you played and what you thought of it. This can be one sentence or a five-pager, with images or without, maybe you link to your own blog or you include a YouTube video you made - all of that is welcome and encouraged.
The goal here is to motivate each other, discuss games, make some new friends, and maybe we’ll discover hidden gems that we can then buy for ourselves to play while we further ignore our backlogs? Who knows!

Not sure yet and want to see how I keep it up first? That’s fair.
