Palate cleansing with two of my most favourite games in the world.
Immersive eldritch-horror survivalcraft and space ships. Yes, really.
After I playtested 50 demos last month, I (apparently) needed a little bit of a break. Partially because we went through a heat wave that effectively disabled my brain from being able to form words, let alone write blog posts, but I’ve also just been invested into two of my most favourite games in the world again: RimWorld, an old love, and Vintage Story, a new one.
I had initially bought Vintage Story at the end of 2024, and played it a little bit then - but I was too invested in RimWorld at that point to really get into it.
A couple of weeks ago, though, I had one of my Minecraft cravings - but this time, because I’m impatiently awaiting the release of Thaumcraft 7, I didn’t feel like playing actual Minecraft, and went back to Vintage Story instead.
And boy, was that a good call! I’ve been playing nothing else for the past three weeks, and I’m still not bored with it. I wrote a full review blog post that you should absolutely check out (after this one).
I gave Dune: Awakening a try as well, and played it for a bit, but I’m sad to report that it didn’t captivate me as much as I had expected so I haven’t played beyond a dozen hours. Nothing much to say about it, other than I don’t feel very invested in the main quest, and the base decorations didn’t inspire much creativity so I simply lost interest. I’ll likely revisit it later.
On top of that, RimWorld has just released its new DLC, Oddyssey, and of course I’m re-addicted to that, too. Introducing grav ships (essentially the mobile base I’ve been craving for so long) is the perfect opportunity to revisit my Mechanitor playthrough and adapt my medieval science and knowledge ideology to a more modern version. Watch me disappear into the rabbit hole… right about now.
Safe to assume my backlog won’t advance any time soon, but looking on the bright side, that also means I haven’t bought anything in this year’s Steam Summer Sale. Silver linings.
