Train games tier list.
Games where the main theme is trains: e.g. railway management, station management, driving a train, etc.
What makes a good train game for me?
The sounds! If the choo-choo doesn’t choo-choo, it’s not a train game.
Masterpiece
My favourite games in the genre, the top of the crop. As perfect as they can get, a true master class. The games I keep returning to.
My very first train game ever!
Masterpiece mainly because nostalgia. The most addictive choo choo game I’ve played!
Gorgeous graphics, dopamine release, good music, interesting perks, collectibles and just overall super cosy.
Quite good
Games that are great, with a lot of the things I love, that I got hooked on for a good while before putting them down.
Possibly a masterpiece in the making!
Start in a run-down station, clean it, rebuild it, upgrade it, sell tickets, mail packages, fix electronics - all the good simulation stuff.Fun and challenging co-op game!
Crafting rails on your train and setting them down so the train can keep going, while defending against terrain and enemies. Fun!
Mixed bag
These are the “needs some more time in the oven” games. They have good elements that make me not dismiss them entirely, but they also lack in too many areas to really hook me.
Gorgeous train diorama sandbox that could use some presets.
An empty sandbox is a difficult point to start from, but aside from that, a very gorgeous diorama builder visually speaking.Cosy and charming, but wonky camera.
Everything about this game is cosy and endearing, except the camera making it REALLY hard for me to enjoy it.A puzzle game I wish was a citybuilder.
Gorgeous voxel graphics and interesting puzzles, though I find myself wishing the puzzles never ended and I could just keep building in this world.
Really bad
I just really did not enjoy these games. They were either frustrating, unpolished, un-userfriendly, or just plain boring.
A lot of charm but unplayable to me.
The entire premise of this simulator is nice and nostalgic, but all of that is ruined by my utter frustration at the controls. Not user-friendly at all.
Honorable mentions
Not technically a train game, but almost.
The game I wish Station to Station was. Villagers arrive to your city by train, so it’s not technically a train game, but close enough! A masterpiece.
